There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone attain the dream of homeownership.
For years, RealtySouth has been helping people purchase and sell homes . We play a key role not only in people’s lives, but also in their neighborhoods, because increased homeownership has proven to have significant positive effects on the health, stability and well being of our communities.
A native of Kentucky, we were transferred about every 2 years, and moved to Birmingham as a teen. I graduated in the fall of 1977 from the University of Alabama with a BS in marketing and a minor in real estate and 2 months later began my real-estate career with a small Century 21 brokerage. I moved my license to Johnson-Rast & Hays Co. in October of 1979 where I became one of the top sales people in what was then a 400 man sales force, winning my branch’s top listings and contracts award my last 2 full years. In 1987 I accepted an offer to join Brigham-Williams and Assoc. to help grow what was then a one office, 30 agent firm.
By the time BW and JRH merged to form RealtySouth in the spring of 1998, we had grown to 225 agents in 5 offices. I'm now General Manager and COO at RealtySouth, Alabama’s largest and one of its oldest real estate companies.
As COO of RealtySouth I support our hundreds of agents and brokers in our offices throughout Alabama. For over 20 years I also handled our company’s lawsuits. During these 20+ years of experience and with hundreds of associates, I gained exposure to more legal claims and suits against licensees than any broker in Alabama (and most other states as well). After acquisition by Home Services of America Inc. in 2003 until the hiring of our general counsel, I served as our firm’s legal contact This enabled me to learn more about the legal challenges to the brokerage business than brokers commonly experience.
I have served as President of the Birmingham association in 2009, chaired National Association of Realtors risk management committee, our state association PAC and other committees, and was named Alabama Realtor of the year in 2010. I am or have been a director at all three levels, won a number of awards, most recently Realtor Emeritus. I'm not old but I've been around a long time!
I have been a speaker and on various panels at state and national meetings, and have written a CE class now used statewide, the principles of which have helped modify some practices at many offices in the Birmingham area and have reduced our current lawsuits significantly.
On a personal note, I have served as a deacon of my church, a director of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Young Business Leaders of Birmingham, Greater Birmingham YMCA, Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama and coach for my children’s ball teams.
The father of four and grandfather of two, when not brokering real estate, my hobbies include hunting and fishing and travel with my first wife Lois.
